About VirgoCX — company background

Founded in 2018, VirgoCX is a Toronto-based cryptocurrency exchange that supports buying and selling over 40 digital assets. The company is backed by nine investors and raised $11.1 million CAD in a 2023 round of funding. In April 2025, VirgoCX announced it would cease operating as a custodial service, and customers would need non-custodial wallets to continue using the platform.

How to sign up on VirgoCX exchange

Before you can even get started trading on VirgoCX, you have to go through the rigorous verification process (which usually involves providing proof of identification). This can take time. The reason for this is VirgoCX's commitment to certifications and compliance with regulations and insurers.

  1. Get started
    After selecting the Get Started button, fill in the create account form.
  2. Set up payment
    Before you can start trading, you have to add your bank account to your VirgoCX account. There are several options to choose from, so choose the option most compatible.
  3. Provide identification
    Before you can make withdrawals and increase your transaction limits, you must submit proof of address and some additional identification. Use either a passport or a driver's license for this.
  4. Start trading
    After all that is processed, you're ready to trade on VirgoCX.

Is VirgoCX safe?

VirgoCX is registered with FINTRAC (Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada) and AUSTRAC (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre). It's compliant with PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) in Canada.

Past hacks
As of the time of writing, VirgoCX has never been hacked.

Audits
VirgoCX has also been audited by accredited accountants. In December 2020, it underwent (and successfully passed) a financial audit by DW LLP, a chartered professional accounting firm based in Ontario. The exchange also completed a reserve audit by Huayan CPA Professional Corporation and an AML audit by MNP LLP.

Custody
In 2025, VirgoCX announced it would cease providing custodial services in Canada and Australia. All customers must have a self-managed (non-custodial) wallet to buy and sell on the platform. As such, VirgoCX does not hold or insure and crypto assets on behalf of customers.
